Two Day Radio Telephony Course

General
This course has been designed to cover all the theory and practical elements of the Radio Telephony Licence (VHF) and will be taught in one day. After the training is complete, written and practical tests will be conducted by our own UK CAA-authorized examiner. The results will be known immediately.

The student then sends the completed application form, and the fee of 90,- Euro to the CAA, which will issue the licence.

Normally, we prefer to limit the number of students in each class to SIX. This is mainly because of the practical test, conducted on the second day, where each student requires about 1.5 hours time. However, if someone wants to attend a specific course that is already full, he will have to understand that it may take three days, not two!

Details
The course, written examination papers and the practical test are entirely in English.

Therefore it is important that each student has reasonable command of the English language, before starting the course. If you are not certain about your level of English, we will help you find out quite easily - you simply need to phone us, and we will tell you after one or two minutes of conversation if you are at a suitable level to take the standard course.

To attend the course, you should obtain a copy of the CAA publication. You can either buy a copy, or alternatively download a PDF-file from the internet. The document can be found here - you will get the adress after inscription!

This is the "bible" of radio telephony. It is a very good document and quite easy to read. It covers some things that are unique to the UK. However, the UK test will make references to these things, so it is still very relevant.

Please make yourself familiar with it before your arrival (but you do not need to remember every part of it). It is our job to teach you the important parts, so that you will be a safe and efficient pilot whenever speaking to Air Traffic Control.

Assuming that you have a sufficient grasp of the English language and you are familiar with CAP413, then you should have no problem with the course, which consists of the following parts:

Day 1: Theory and written test

Evolution of controlled airspace and radio procedures. Definitions. Abbreviations. Call signs. RT protocol. Types of services available. Flight plans. Flight information service. Standard clearances, conditional clearances. LARS and MATZ (in the UK), Transponder usage. Emergency procedures. ATIS, Volmet

All students take the written examination.

Discussion of the RT Practical test and group practice for it, using a format very similar to the one used on the proper exam.

Day 2: The practical test

This takes about one and a half hour, including debriefing. Only one student can be tested at a time, so the last student may finish at about 1800 hours.

The student will then be issued the certified application form for the CAA RTF licence, which must be sent to the adress shown. Finally, the licence will be mailed to the student.
